Detective Made Easy eBook John Swartzwelder
Detective Made Easy caught me a little by surprise; I missed its release by several months. As usual, it was a quick and fun read about Frank's mis-adventures. It starts out with Burly trying to make life a little easier for himself by getting a bunch of gadgets to do his 'detecting' for him, since there's a bit of a tech craze going on in Central City right now, but naturally things don't work out so well for Frank and he decides to leave town when a robotic PI takes all of his work. The new place he sets up shop; however, appears to be a dream come true, to the point he forces himself to overlook suspicious activities for a while. Burly actually solves hundreds of cases and even comes up with ideas on how to get things back to normal. At first, I was excited about the story treading on somewhat new ground for this series, machines being the primary antagonist, but it eventually went to Swartzwelder's tried-and-true alien plot, which along with time travel is used far too much for my taste. The book also seemed shorter than the average Burly book, but they're all pretty short so that may be just my perception. Nevertheless, I still thoroughly enjoyed the read, the satirical points made about reality were dead on and the plot was quite different than the average alien one from this series, and I recommend any of Swartzwelder's works to fans of comedic storylines, or the Simpsons for that matter because the episodes John wrote were some of the best.

Detective Made Easy eBook John Swartzwelder Reviews
Frank Burly is back.
In this last entry in Swartzwelder's series,
our aging and tired detective is looking for the easy solution to his occupational problems.
Being lazy and not very sharp, he buys a variety of new gadgets, designed to make life easy for him.
Unfortunately for him,the gadgets malfunction and he finds himself getting replaced by a detecting robot (complete with retractable Sherlock Holmes hat) and forced to leave town.
This is a return to form after last year's disappointing "Million dollar Policeman."
There are some very funny moments in this novel and also some messages about the gullibility of crowds, the gadget craze and the fallible human condition.
It's also nice to see Burly back to actual detecting. He solves over 200 cases in the course of the novel, although most involve finding an escaped feline.
Overall, this is a worthy addition to the Swartzwelder oeuvre.
If you enjoyed the previous entries, you should definitely buy this one too.
Swartzwelder's 9th Burly book falls flat.
Repetitive dialogue, re-purposed stage directions, an identical 'Second Act Trap' from The Million Dollar Detective and recycled Homer Humor (tm) make this a sad installment to the tale of my personal fourth favorite fictional detective.
It's still a sight better to have been through than the majority of modern humor books out there... just feels like a phoned in if not cribbed attempt at Swartzweldery mayhem.
But while the word-food might have been terrible but at least the portions were terrific. Detective Made Easy is the shortest Frank Burly tale to date.
Vintage Swartzxwelder
This was vintage Swartzxwelder. Frank Burly was as entertaingly inept as always. Another enjoyable read in the series.
Having read all of the Frank Burly books this year, I must say this one seemed to be his best in terms of consistency of jokes and writing. There is a nice stride in terms of the plot moving along, where you're waiting as much to see where the plot is going as you are waiting for the next joke. I really hope he releases another one soon.
John Swartzwelder, one of the more well-known writers for The Simpsons, is both a recluse and libertarian, so it makes a certain amount of sense that he would move onto being a self-published author. This is one of his funniest books and comes highly recommended.
